ECOFUNCO is a research project funded by the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking, a Public-Private Partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium, operating under Horizon 2020.
The overall objective is to select, extract, functionalise molecules (proteins, polysaccharides, cutin, polyphenols, carotenoids, fatty acids) from highly available, low valorised biomass such as tomato peels and seeds, melon seeds, legumes and sunflower press cake amongst others, for the development of new bio-based coating materials to be applied on two different substrates (cellulosic and plastic based). These coatings will provide improved performances compared to currently available products and at the same time have more sustainable end of life options.
Demostrators at semi industrial scale will be delivered for different applications: Cellulosic and non-woven products for personal care, food packaging and tableware.
ECOFUNCO takes a significant step towards the efficient use of bio-based material resources and their economically viable production, contributing to the decrease of the Environmental Impact of packaging goods and disposable products.
We look for researchers and professionals interested in exploring the possibilities of the project results for all type of industry applications. Also, the joint organization of dissemination events seem a very efficient option to us. Let’s give us the opportunity to take the best advantage of the research effort, talking about our synergies.
ECOFUNCO is part of the Biorefine Cluster Europe (BCE) initiative. The BCE interconnects projects and people within the domain of bio-based resource recovery, striving to contribute to a more sustainable resource management.
